RIDING FOR THE DISABLED AND PET THERAPY PROGRAM

The Bathurst Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) launched in 2008 and currently has over 50 riders and non-riders who come to the centre to participate in horse related, agricultural activities.

Bathurst RDA are currently undertaking a Pet Therapy Program, where disabled children and adults interact with small farm animals in a purpose built shed where they can feel safe while they connect with the animals.

Currently the four-legged friends involved in the Pet Therapy Program include eight horses, two pigs, goats, donkeys, llamas and one cow, alpaca, mini horse and a shetland pony, along with one cat and a dog.

The horses and pet therapy animals are free to roam and graze on a 40 acre property, and visitors who ride are accompanied by qualified horse trainers, to ensure safety at all times.

The Bathurst RDA rely solely on donations and volunteers to keep the organisation up and running.

Their aim is to provide horse related therapy to both riders and non-riders in many forms, whether that be brushing, leading or patting a horse as not everyone wants to ride.

“Our message is that we run a caring, friendly and safe place for those with disabilities to feel comfortable when taking part in riding or out pet therapy program.” Lin Doherty, Bathurst RDA Coach.

Anyone can volunteer their time to the Bathurst Riding for the Disabled, as long as they undergo a Working with Children’s Check.

If you or someone you know are interested in being a Bathurst RDA Volunteer, contact the centre on 0407 299 728 or drop in at 16 Research Station Drive, Bathurst.
